Who are the rock stars that are part of the exclusive Club dei 27? The exhibition underway at the Ono arte (via Santa Margherita 10) will be unveiled on Wednesday, December 13th.
Title: Club 27: Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, Amy Winehouse, Brian Jones and Jean Michel Basquiat: a collective exhibition that celebrates some of the most important artists through the so-called ‘Club dei 27’ of the history of music deceased at the same age, 27, often due to drug and alcohol abuse, murder or suicide.
The deaths of several famous twenty-seven year old musicians between 1969 and 1971 led to the belief that deaths are more common at this age, and that there is a ‘statistical peak’ of death among artists at the age of 27. In fact, Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison all died at that age, between 1969 and 1971. At the time the coincidence raised some comments, but it was only with the death of Kurt Cobain, in 1994, that the idea of a Club 27 began to take hold in public perception, becoming a myth fed by the media.
In 2011, seventeen years after Cobain’s death, Amy Winehouse died at the age of 27, once again pushing attention to the ’27 Club ‘. Only three years before, the singer had expressed the fear of dying at that age.
The exhibition (will remain open until February 24, 2019) is a pretext to investigate some of the great icons of music that have influenced popular culture to the present day, and is composed of 40 works, some exhibited in exclusive Italian, by Jill Furmanovsky , Michael Lavine, Charles Peterson, Jan Persson, Terry O’Neill, Baron Wolman, Lee Jaffe, James Fortune, Guy Webster.
