Studio Bolognese (the old name for the university) arose as a result of the work that some masters of grammar, rhetoric and logic applied to the study of Justinian’s Code (482-565) in its entirety and not in skimpy compendia, as was the practice at the time.
The name University originates from the Universitas guilds of students in Bologna, which were divided into Ultramontani as opposed to Citramontani, or Italian students.
Bologna is also known as La Dotta, because it is the city with the oldest university in the western world, recognised by all other national and international universities, dating back to 1088.
Over nine centuries have seen Bologna always at the centre of culture at the highest level.
